Exhibition Design at Bronx Zoo

Graphic Design students participated in a field trip to the Bronx Zoo in which they were given a tour of the different facilities and their functions. Meanwhile at the zoo students learned what aspects of conservation would be beneficial when designing a habitat for a certain animals. The last important factor learned about exhibit design is an realistic habitat should still be able to bring profit to the zoo.

Forbes Hackathon

Students participated in a life hack event sponsored by Forbes at 5th Avenue. The event lasted for about 5 hours, students had the time to create an idea that would make life easier for the high school student.  A mock up website was drafted and presented to leaders at the event who then voted on the projects that were best. Students from BHSVA unfortunately didn't win but one group made it into the top 10

Creative Coding at Micosoft

Seven BHSVA juniors and seniors are participating in the six week course at Microsoft in NYC. Students are learning how to code by working in a real software development environment to design and program games. Featuring online and in session lessons that emphasize hands-on coding.

According to Microsoft, to be well-educated citizens in a computing-intensive world and to be prepared for careers in the 21st century, students must have a clear understanding of the principles and practices of computer science. Computer science will open many doors for our BHSVA students, regardless the field of study or occupation they choose to enter.

BHSVA Almuni Event

I want to thank the eighteen alumni that attended the first ever BHSVA College Alumni
Event on November 25th. It was a huge success and their time, insight and advice was
appreciated by all. I was so thrilled to see how the current juniors
and seniors sort out your help. I witnessed firsthand that you made a
real difference and recognize that you took time out of your busy schedules to
give back to the BHSVA community.

Here is some of the student feedback:
I learned about tuition and how you pay by semester.
Students gave me a good perspective in the transition from high school
to college.
I received advice that I should take pre-calculus as a College Now
course since it is not offered in our high school.
I heard  how some colleges have you take general college classes
before you can apply for a specific program and how well you do in
your classes can determine if you get accepted into a program.
The advise I took to heart was not to procrastinate.
After talking to alumni I realized that the amount of commuting time
is something to take into consideration when allying to schools.
I learned that SUNY FIT has a major dealing with programming and technology.

Senior Sweater

Designing the senior sweatshirt was a very pleasant experience and gave me the opportunity to have my work printed. Working together with Mr. Sanchez, the Graphic Design teacher, we came up with three different sweatshirt ideas for seniors to choose from.  The design process was very challenging because we had to combine colors, fonts, and design elements to work together. I will be able to include the sweatshirt design into my art portfolio, which is a bonus. If I had a chance to do it over and over again I would and I encourage the graphic designers who are juniors to start thinking about a design.
